American-born Islamist fighter Omar Hammami, known as Abu Mansoor al-Amriki, was added Wednesday (November 14th) to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) list of most wanted terrorists.
Hammami allegedly travelled to Somalia in 2006, where he is believed to be, and joined al-Shabaab’s military wing before rising to be a leader in the organisation, according to the FBI.
The US State Department designated al-Shabaab, which is now affiliated with al-Qaeda, as a terrorist group in 2008. The group has “repeatedly threatened terrorist actions against America and American interests,” the FBI said in a statement.
Hammami, who has been indicted in the United States on various terrorism charges, has been the subject of an international arrest warrant since 2007.
He recently released a video online calling on the “leaders of jihad” to intervene and find a solution to the “the bitter situation that currently engulfs the Somali [foreign fighters]“.
